Investing in our Veterans Legacy
Minister for Veterans Affairs David Elliott today announced an additional $175,000 is to be invested in the protection and repair of local war memorials and funding new education programs that preserve the Anzac legacy.
It includes $125,000 for the latest round of the Community War Memorial Fund, established in 2008, which helps communities throughout NSW complete a variety of projects aimed at protecting and conserving the state’s war memorials.
“As we commemorate the Centenary of Anzac it’s wonderful to see so many of NSW’s historic war memorials getting the attention they deserve,” he said.
“Many of these memorials have significant heritage value for their communities, with some commemorating conflicts as far back as the Boer War, which ended in 1902.
“Communities can again apply for funding of up to $10,000 which can be used for any aspect of repair or conservation of memorials, halls, gardens – any monument or building dedicated to our ex-servicemen and women.”
In addition to the Community War Memorials Fund, a total of $50,000 is available as part of the latest round of the Anzac Community Grant Program.
This fund assists communities in their work to commemorate NSW’s Anzac history.
“This program is another important element of the Centenary of Anzac commemorations, and a wonderful opportunity for community groups to access the funds needed to complete their projects,” Mr Elliott said.
“Grants of up to $2,000 are available to schools, community organisations and historical societies for educational and commemorative programs, and projects that support veterans.”
Applications for the Community War Memorial Fund close on 11 November 2016 and for the Anzac Community Grants program on 24 February 2017.
