Community War Memorials Fund Funding Criteria

  1. Applications must be for a bona fide war memorial commemorating Australia’s military heritage and located within the State of New South Wales or, if located outside New South Wales, of direct and substantial relevance to the State.
  2. An application may be made by any organisation or individual, provided the owner or custodian of the memorial supports the bid.
  3. All memorials subject to an application under the Community War Memorials Fund must first be recorded on the Register of War Memorials in New South Wales.   4. Applications must be for the repair and/or conservation of existing memorials, and not for the construction of new ones.
  5. Applicants must first demonstrate that they have applied for Commonwealth funding under the Saluting Their Service program administered by the Australian Government’s Commemorations Grants Advisory Panel (for information go to www.dva.gov.au). This requirement may be waived for minor grants (up to $4000), which may be provided solely from the NSW fund.
  6. The maximum NSW grant for any one application will ordinarily be $10,000, unless extraordinary circumstances prevail or a memorial is considered to be at risk and of State or National significance.
  7. Applications relating to memorials located on private property are eligible for funding.
  8. The definition of a “memorial” includes public monuments, memorial places, landscaped spaces, buildings and sculptures as well as indoor fixtures such as honour boards, plaques, busts or bas reliefs.
  9. Applications should be submitted in the following format enclosing:
    • a covering letter to the State War Memorials Committee;
    • a certified copy of an application to the Commonwealth Saluting Their Service program;
    • the funding amount requested from the NSW Government;
    • at least one quote outlining the schedule of works required;
    • a contact telephone number and/or email details should further information be required by the Committee to assess the application.
  10. The State War Memorials Committee will announce grants biannually, on or around Anzac Day and on or around Remembrance Day. However, the Committee may make extraordinary grants as circumstances require.
  11. The State War Memorials Committee may in extraordinary circumstances approve applications that do not meet all of the above criteria.
