More than $140,000 to restore 31 war memorials

Minister for Veterans Affairs David Elliott today announced more than $140,000 would be invested in repairing, upgrading and maintaining 31 war memorials across NSW.

The latest round of the Community War Memorial Fund includes more than $31,000 to refurbish memorial community halls in Ariah Park, Bulga, Bellata and Wingham in regional NSW and $10,000 to restore the Rocky Hill War Memorial in Goulburn.

Six memorials in Liverpool will receive funding, including the John Edmondson VC Memorial Clock in honour of Australia’s first Victoria Cross winner of World War II.

The Community War Memorial Fund assists in the restoration and maintenance of local memorials, which often play a symbolic role in communities.

Mr Elliott said as we commemorate the Centenary of Anzac, it is important to ensure community war memorials are preserved.

“The NSW Government will provide a record 31 grants this year including funding to upgrade and restore 20 World War I memorials. The memorials are a reminder of the sacrifice made by thousands of soldiers who served their country and it is essential these monuments stand strong and proud,” Mr Elliott said.

“I would like to thank the councils, RSL sub-branches and members of the community which agreed to co-fund some of these critical projects.”

RSL NSW President Rod White AM said he is delighted by the collaboration between the RSL, Government and community groups.

“The Taree Memorial Clock will now be returned to its original glory thanks to funding by the NSW Government, Taree RSL sub-branch and the Council. This is something we can all be very proud of,” Mr White said.
