Extra security for Anzac Day March

New security measures will be in place for Anzac Day in Sydney’s CBD to ensure community safety as NSW commemorates the Centenary of Anzac.

Crowd control measures, bag checks and new vehicle blockers will be deployed across the city in response to anticipated crowds of tens of thousands across the day.

Minister for Counter Terrorism and Minister for Veterans Affairs David Elliott said the blockers would be trialed for use at major events like Anzac Day and at other locations around the CBD, as part of the government’s commitment to public protection and its obligations under the Crowded Places Strategy.

“The Anzac Day March covers a significant part of the Sydney CBD attracting thousands of people and increased security measures need to be in place to ensure the safety of both marchers and spectators,” Mr Elliott said.

“The increased security measures do not indicate a specific threat to any site, but it’s our priority to ensure the community feels safe.”
Crowds attending CBD events are encouraged to plan their trip, allow extra time for bag checks and use the additional public transport services to avoid extensive road closures, which will be in place from 2:30am to 4pm.

“We are expecting large crowds so please plan ahead, be aware of your surroundings and listen to any directions from the police. It can be a long day for many involved in marches and commemorative events so please be prepared for warm weather by drinking plenty of water and remain hydrated,” Mr Elliott said.

“Anzac Day is a time for NSW to come together to honour the Anzac legacy – whether that be by making the journey into the city or partaking in a local commemoration.”

The additional security is funded by the NSW Government, RSL NSW and the City of Sydney.
