Proposed sale of NSW military assets
The NSW Government has been made aware of a plan by the Commonwealth Government to sell multiple military assets including the heritage-listed Victoria Barracks in Paddington and Lancer Barracks in Parramatta.
The Minns Labor Government always welcomes opportunities to deliver more well-located housing and open spaces, and we will engage constructively with the Commonwealth following their announcement.
We understand the Federal Government’s desire to consolidate defence assets following the Defence Estate Audit, and have been informed that further consultation will be undertaken. It is crucial that this includes consultation with veterans and their families who have deep connections with these sites.
Lancer Barracks is the longest continuously operational military facility in Australia since colonial settlement, opening in 1820, while Victoria Barracks holds profound historic and military significance since opening in 1848.
These sites alone have stood as a place of service, sacrifice and shared memory for generations of veterans and their families.
For many, these sites hold deep personal meaning and represent an enduring link to Australia’s defence history.
The Minns Labor Government is committed to continuing to support veterans and their families through a range of initiatives including the NSW Veterans Strategy 2025–2030, the construction of a new war memorial in The Domain Sydney, and the Veteran Employment Program.
