PAMS 2016
The 24 Premier's Anzac Memorial Scholars, Supervising Teachers and Tour Leaders undertook a fantastic educational tour of France and Belgium. The scholars represented NSW at the 2016 official centenary commemorations of the battles of Fromelles and Pozieres, which continue to hold significance due to the high loss of Australian lives during these battles. A tour highlight for the scholars was meeting His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d) and the Australian Ambassador to France His Excellency Mr Stephen Brady AO CVO at the Australian Embassy in France.

The tour party visited numerous sites along the Western Front where scholars learned about the battles and those who fought, and commemorated their memory. Each scholar researched a soldier who served on the Western Front during WWI and imagined what it was like for that person to serve through an immersive ‘Life at the Front’ experience in Passchendaele, Belgium.

The program was delivered by Veterans’ Affairs, Department of Premier and Cabinet, in partnership with the Department of Education. Scholars were selected on the basis of their passion for Australian history and the outstanding contributions they had made to their school community. The scholarship provides the opportunity for scholars to develop their interest in history, understanding of the Anzac tradition and leadership ability. Scholars are able to share their experiences with their local communities. Supervising teachers use the knowledge gained through the tour to develop educational resources and lessons for their students.
