 North Bondi SLSC has introduced a specially designed program to help fast-track ADF members in gaining their Bronze Medallion qualification to become lifesavers to help address the challenges faced by returning ADF personnel returning from service to everyday life.  Participants will undergo aquatics skills training in a small learning environment with trainers and assessors who have defence force backgrounds, which ensures efficient integration into lifesaving and allows for existing knowledge and experience from ADF training and service to be considered.

Approx. 60 local community members especially new migrants will be invited to an event explaining the significance of Anzac Day to make them aware about the contribution of the military personnel and the importance of Anzac Day in our life. Military service professionals will be honoured with  a certificate of appreciation and a memento. Respects will be paid to the people who have sacrificed their lives in the First World War and an entertainment program  will be organised with refreshments to follow.

In Flanders Fields poppy garden beds 

To build a deeper understanding of the  sacrifices of soldiers during war and keep  our history alive through the message of the poem 'In Flanders Fields' (by Canadian medical officer, Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, first published in December 1915.).The focus of the poem will be included in the K-6 units of work and the work of the students to maintain the garden beds will promote a culture of respect and responsibility.

Commemorative Wartime Window Display

The design, creation and installation of an imaginative diorama on a decal to be placed on a 7m x 3m glass wall.  The decal will provide the visitor with imagery depicting important elements of the local contribution and activity at that time. Images will include aircraft involved, interior shots, personnel, shipping and submarine activity, and shots of local wartime landmarks such as the mined and barbed wire fenced beaches.  It will also pay tribute to the young cadets at the local high school who, it is recorded, were the only school cadets in the history of Australia to be armed. Lastly it will draw to the visitor's attention to the role locals played at this time due to the constant threat to their city.

Year 7 Drama Ensemble

Year 7 students will research and devise an original drama work to be performed at the school during the annual Anzac assembly, and for a community Senior Citizen organisation. The performance venues will be confirmed pending pandemic restrictions. If a live performance is not possible, the piece will be filmed. Students will be encouraged to seek direct verbal testimony from community members with relevant stories to tell.

Preservation of War Memorabilia

Currently on hand the Cronulla RSL Sub-Branch has a Memorabilia Collection of over 2,300 items expanding all 20th century wars. The goal is to preserve and restore these items to remember and experience times of war. The first task is Swing Mounting, cleaning and correlating approximately 300 medals.

‘Our Brave Four of A16-173’

This project has three priorities; the first involves landscaping the current sandstone school war memorial with a sustainable native living memorial garden by planting ‘Spirit of Anzac’ grevilleas as a feature with other suitable plants. A bench seat featuring a commemorative plaque or engraving will be placed within the place. Secondly, the upgraded memorial at the front of our school will become a focus for a student-led commemorative gatherings. Dapto RSL, community members and descendants of the airmen will be invited to attend. Thirdly, a small portion of the funds will be used to purchase a perpetual trophy, presented by an invited RSL member and awarded to selected year 12 student who each year has for example: consistently demonstrated a positive, selfless and compassionate manner in year 12.

This project will develop a dedicated website to inform and educate the wider community about the military service of men and women from the Goulburn district. A key outcome is to broaden their audience by providing online access to service personnel stories, to the  digital collection, and by acting as a platform for virtual representations of our exhibition program and as a form of preservation of this work into the future. Furthermore, the project will promote the work and activities associated with the Memorial and the Museum and provide information and online access to a range of student programming, research and archive material that depicts the Memorial and Museum, their history and their regional, state and national significance.

Honour Local Veterans of the WW2 8th Division

After WW2 a Memorial Avenue was dedicated to the Local Veterans of the 8th Division who paid the ultimate sacrifice. The Memorial consisted of an Avenue of Trees, at the base of each, a Memorial Plaque was placed to commemorate that Veteran's Life. A  few of the trees have succumbed to the ravages of time.

To preserve the memory of those trees a section of a trunk was rescued by a local wood-turner who has made a circular Memorial Plaque to commemorate all the 8th Division Veterans. A timber tray will be purchased and engraved to display the Memorial Plaque at the Gunnedah RSL sub-Branch Office.

Anzac Memorial Garden

To create a dedicated memorial garden which will include a paved area and a specially made plaque to recognise the garden as a special site in recognition of the Anzac people and affiliated war heroes. The garden will be used to hold  Anzac Day and Remembrance Day assemblies each year and will be planted with Australian natives as well as Daffodil bulbs. A landscaper will complete the project with a local artist constructing a mosaic mural set into the paved area.

In Poppy's Field - Remembrance Garden

 "In Poppy's Field - Remembrance Garden" will replicate the line of remembrance along Anzac Parade, Canberra from the War Memorial to Parliament House. The garden will be positioned in line with the Heritage Building built in 1872 and school flagpoles. A five metre mural with a black background and large red poppies representing each class in the school will be installed. Above the mural will be a metal silhouette of the rising sun and the words "Lest We Forget". In front of the wall will be a formal garden bed with Anzac roses planted behind five plaques with the names of five servicemen that the students will research and explore their connection to our community.

Students Help Veterans Share Their Story

Produce 10 video interviews of  service personnel. Each 5minute interview will be conducted in a small Mosman studio. The interviewers will be Northern Beaches public high schools students on the northern beaches.  The interviewers will be provided with an approved set of questions and will be asked to nominate one question they propose to ask they feel is relevant and helpful for their peers to gain insights into the veteran's lives and their experiences of serving their country. The questions will be vetted to ensure they appropriately develop a profile of the veteran.

The Moruya Remembers Committee and Thelmore Pistol Club will install a bronze RAAF eagle emblem and a bronze signage or plaque with the words 'No. 11 Operational Base Unit RAAF'  on or near the wall of the relic WW2 Operations Bunker.   Once the plaque is in place The Moruya Remembers Committee intends to commence Anzac Day Dusk Services and continue to educate local youth through their participation in commemorative events such as VP Day.

Take the Year 10 cohort on an excursion to the Coffs Harbour Bunker Cartoon Gallery, Beacon Hill Lookout and the Coffs Harbour Naval Cadet Unit. This will then be followed by students from Year 10 interacting with members of the local veteran community on school grounds in small groups on a rotational basis engaging the learners with a study of the causes, scope and nature of warfare, as well as the significant events and experiences had by Australians in war. Students will also explore the impact of the wars on Australia and why they are commemorated.

The Australian Defence Force (Director General - ADF Sport - Joint Support Services Division) has invited NSW Veterans to participate in the annual ADF Sailing Regatta at the Royal Australian Navy Sailing Association on Sydney Harbour - recognising the importance of the contribution of NSW Veterans and the importance or retaining contact with the present day ADF. This  'Veterans' Team will compete against Army, Navy and Air Force and provide much needed support and recognition to members of the NSW veteran community.
