Commemorative plaques for World War I service personnel from Kearsley and Abernethy

The Committee wishes to honour 24 men from the Australian and British forces during World War I (who have not yet been acknowledged) by placing individual plaques on the World War I Bench of Remembrance in the grounds of the Arthur Francis, CSC OAM Remembrance Garden at Kearsley Community Hall. The service records were able to be located after accessing 1913 and 1930 electoral rolls for the villages of Kearsley, Edenville and Abernethy.

Through this project, we will commemorate the upcoming 50th anniversary of the suspension of National Service in December 2022 and produce commemorative caps. We also aim to identify the approximate 923 NSW Government Railway employees who were conscripted into the Army to serve their National Service. We will achieve this by searching through the Railway Archives, we will also promote the project through social media and will also enlist the help of the Vietnam Veterans Associations, who have indicated that they will canvas their members.

On one of the walls of the public foyer of the Sydney Police Centre at 151 - 241 Goulburn Street, Surry Hills 2010 are two Honour Rolls made of marble. One lists those Police Officers who served in The Great War (1914-1918), the other of those Police Officers who served in WW2 (1939-1945). It is proposed to have another marble plaque made and erected listing those Police Officers who were called up for 2 years of National Service from 1965-1972.

A local production company would provide the equipment and expertise to run the event ensuring a more professional approach. They will cover both the Dawn Service and afternoon march.

The Taylors Beach community has a beautifully maintained park with a gazebo and flag pole. Through this project we seek to provide electricity to the gazebo and lighting to the flag pole, together with a plaque at the base of the flag pole. We will achieve this by Port Stephens Council committing to connecting electricity from the existing nearby P.S. Council owned meter box. We also hope to be able to purchase pre-loved bench seating as we have just one bench seat in our park.

The St Mary's Commemorative Walk

Employing an artist to paint aspects of the armed forces, such as a light-horse soldier, a Gallipoli scene, navy boat, Air Force plane, and a sunset including poppies depicting the going down of the sun, and attach the freezes to the paling fence on the northern side of the school. They will be attached to the fence at intervals like a walk of fame. Each image will be facing the same way towards the west along the fence. The 'walk' will be visible from the main access road in front of the school.

Veterans Health Week 10 Day Movement Challenge

The Veterans Health Week Movement Challenge aims to bridge the gap for any veteran that may be prevented from attending our VHW activities such as those at John of God Hospital and other health clinics. Our vision is to make the 10 Day Movement Challenge super simple for the hospital team to facilitate with 10 separate activities spaced over 10 separate days; it all counts be-it yoga, gardening, swimming, walking, yoga, EP/physio, going to the gym, sailing and surfing.

Whilst conducting sail training, we will sail to historically significant maritime venues around the Pittwater including the former WWII Torpedo Testing Range, coastal defence bunkers and Camp Z of Operation Jaywick in Refuge Bay.

Preservation and display of original letter relating to Patrick Bugden VC

The project has two components. The first is to preserve a very frail form letter written in 1917 by Patrick Bugden VC to the friends of Patrick Bugden's parents who had sent condolences following Paddy's death. The second component is preparing this letter and two high quality replicas for display. One replica will be provided to the RSL and the other displayed in the museum. Both the conservation of the original letter and the production of the replicas will be following best conservation principles.

We seek to enhance the gardens at the Cenotaph. We will achieve this by extending the existing gardens and planting special Gallipoli Centenary roses. This stunning rose was carefully selected to commemorate one of the most significant moments in Australia’s history, the Gallipoli Centenary in 2015. It is bred by world renowned rose breeders, Kordes of Germany and has the exceptional health and disease tolerance that they are famous for.

Researching Local Servicemen and Women

History of the sub-Branch and Ex-servicemen and Woman from the area have been destroyed, and this project will undertake new research into the local Servicemen and women of the area. The sub-Branch has formed a good relationship with the three local public schools in the area, Blacksmiths, Marks Point and Pelican Flat, and will involve their students. We are looking into the resources available through the Anzac Memorial so that we can hopefully support and encourage the 6th Class students to conduct research and avail themselves of resources, through that learning process.

Our project is a continuation of our ANZAC Garden and this year we are wanting to add a sandstone wall to act as a barrier for our Lone Pine Tree and for our soldiers who guard our garden, which we acquired via your generous grant last year. In keeping with the ANZAC spirit the placement of our garden is in an area that the entire school community can appreciate and utilize as a quiet place of reflection.

Remembering our Veterans through living histories

Through this project we seek to produce a documentary on the service of Polish born Ziggy Gnojek’s who joined the Polish Resistance at the age of 14 and his service during WWII for the allied forces. Ziggy became a naturalised Australian in 1956 and in the 65 years since, his stories and dedication to the wellbeing of Australian Veterans through his work with Mereweather-Hamilton-Adamstown RSL sub-Branch draw attention to the importance of Australia’s involvement in WWII through the eyes of a young Polish boy.

FMOTVW is an oral history project aiming to produce 10 video recordings of interviews with local Vietnam War veterans and civilians impacted by the conflict. The videos will be made permanently accessible through our online Heritage Collection website https://heritagecollection.fairfieldcity.nsw.gov.au and shared with project partners and participants.

In this project we will create a small garden corner of remembrance at the front of the Baradine CWA of NSW hall as a reminder of the contribution made by district service women in all wars and conflicts. We will achieve this by planting commemorative Gallipoli roses and purchasing a locally made Pilliga Forest timber bench seat with a commemorative plaque. The commemorative corner will be opened on Anzac Day 2022 with an afternoon tea and a presentation on district women in war by a local historian.

Jack's Visit to Cowra is the story of a young city boy who travels to the country to spend the weekend with his grandparents. While there, Jack hears the compelling story of a Japanese man being found by his Pa in a chicken coop many years ago. Jack hears about the Breakout for the first time and the post-war restoration and friendship that occurred between Japan and Australia because of the kindness shown by the people of Cowra. Being able to print and distribute copies of this book to libraries is the goal of the project.

Anzac Day Video for CALD communities

Through this project, we aim to produce a short video of 30-60s long that will highlight why Anzac Day is important for CALD communities to reflect on and observe, linking the spirit of Anzac to the experiences of CALD, migrants and refugees. We will launch the video to our social media sites, video sharing platforms, share them with our community and partner communities to increase the spread and viewership of this video. This will be a free resource accessible by the public, and we anticipate that the video will reach a minimum of 500-1000 unique viewers in the first week of release by Anzac Day, with viewership growing over time to improve community understanding of the importance of Anzac Day.

Special Anzac Day Commemoration Broadcast in 26 languages

We seek to connect our local communities to the Anzac spirit through a digital and social media public broadcast, as a free digital resource for all community members to access. Our project will invite veterans to a panel that will be shared with community leaders, local business, spiritual leaders, multicultural or religious leaders, the multicultural community, to listen the veteran's lived experiences and the importance of Anzac commemorations, reflect and discuss the Anzac spirit and what it means in today's society. To guarantee accessibility by different cultural groups, we will translate our broadcast into 26 languages, available through subtitles.
