Anzac Day traditions return
Preparations for Anzac Day 2022 are in full swing as the NSW Government gears up for the return of traditional commemorative services, full-scale dawn services and marches across the state.
Minister for Transport and Veterans David Elliott was joined by RSL NSW President Ray James, NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Tony Cooke, and Transport for NSW Chief Operations Officer Howard Collins, to highlight the logistical and operational planning undertaken to return the traditions of Anzac Day to our veterans.
“Anzac Day will be especially moving this year as many veterans for the first time in years, will be able to reconnect with their mates and enjoy traditional annual reunions and commemorative events without restrictions” Mr Elliott said.
“Everyone should take advantage of the NSW Government’s 12 days of fare free travel to attend local reunions and marches or head into the city to show support for our defence force personnel, past and present. The general public will be able to enjoy a number of great viewing areas along either side of Elizabeth Street.
“This year also marks the first time two-up will be played over three days at clubs and pubs during the Anzac Day long weekend,” he said.
RSL NSW President Ray James said all Anzac Day commemorations across NSW will return this year without restrictions, including large-scale events such as the Dawn Service in Martin Place and the Sydney CBD March along Elizabeth Street.
“Anzac Day not only acknowledges the service and sacrifice of our oldest veterans throughout history, but is also a day to support our youngest veterans, and remember the 20-year conflict in the Middle East; the longest in Australia’s military history.” Mr James said.
This Anzac Day:
- Veterans, their family, friends and supporters are encouraged to exercise personal responsibility and wear a mask in crowded places during the Dawn Service and March.
- Transport for NSW will mark Anzac Day by broadcasting the Last Post at Sydney Trains, NSW TrainLink and Sydney Metro stations across the network.
- Veterans and their families from regional communities will have access to free travel on all modes of public transport.
- As large crowds are expected in the CBD, police are encouraging people to leave the car at home and use public transport.
The official NSW Anzac Day Dawn Service will take place at the Cenotaph in Martin Place Sydney starting at 4.30am which is believed to have been the approximate time the first Australians waded ashore at Anzac Cove. The Anzac Day March starts at 9:00am at Martin Place and travels along Elizabeth Street to the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park.
